Flower market switch brings about hike with charges Completely new DELHI: Indicating love in addition to passion by means of a simple flower has donrrrt more costly affair, but that hasn't deterred the hundreds involving students whom in a rush to their particular area florists to buy red roses for their favourite teachers.

With the three main wholesale flower markets of Fatehpuri, Mehrauli, and Connaught Place, today shifted to a single unit in Ghazipur, near the Delhi-Uttar Pradesh border, florists in the city have to bear an increased transportation cost, which is transferred to the buyers in the form of higher prices. The cost of transporting the flowers to Ghazipur has also gone up.

But for Ashok, a flower vendor in Khan Market, it was business as usual despite a 50 per cent increase in his prices. "On the eve of Teachers Day I sell about 1500-2000 single red roses as compared to 200-300 on regular days. The price of both roses and carnations has gone up from Rs 10 to 15, and the prices of other flowers have also increased accordingly," he said. Anticipating a rush of customers, Ashok had kept a bucket full of red roses ready. Thorns taken out, the flowers had been nicely wrapped throughout sheets of transparent plastic.

Another florist, Kishan, has been selling flowers in Defence Colony for the past ten years, and he, too, was compelled to increase prices after the wholesale market moved. "Flowers that were once priced at Rs 50 now sell for Rs 75, those that were for Rs 75 are now Rs 100," he said. But customers who need to buy flowers for special occasions will always continue to do so, he added, as he wrapped red roses for his young customers.

For parents, too, the price rise isn't a hindrance when it comes to their children wantingto buy flowers for Teachers' Day. They say that since it is an annual event, it doesn't really affect their pockets.

"They give their teachers single red roses, which only convey their sentiments. The small increase in price is not a deterrent at all. My own youngsters are generally really thrilled to buy flowers for their teachers and this is something I encourage," said Arti Mathur, a professor.
